Berlin: Christmas market and Winterworld at Potsdamer Platz

The “ Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz ” Christmas market is more like a winter fair. It opens early to mid-November and ends beginning of January. It is the place where you can grab your first grilled Wurst with Glühwein as soon as the autumn gloom kicks in, to get that first whiff of Christmas. Actually, now that supermarkets have started to stock for Christmas from mid-October and for Easter right after Valentines’, it’s all becoming a little messy, calendar-wise and all that sweet expectation is becoming a race of “who opens first“.

Winterwelt does, most definitely. With its giant toboggan run (boasting to be the largest in Europe in the mobile ice slopes division) and its big (free) ice skating rink and curling ring, it’s as close as it gets to a winter world in a city where snow lasts 10 minutes. That is, if it ever falls. If you want real snow, gotta go south. The German South, I mean.

So if you’re in the mood to have some hot drink next to a big chunk of ice, Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz is the place for it. Plus, it comes with the extra perks of being close to three nice Christmas trees in three different nearby spots:

Marlene Dietrich Platz , just around the corner of Alte Potsdamer Str.

A quick tour for a selfie in the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden mall, which has beautiful Christmas decorations.

Sony Center , with its the futuristic umbrella, usually has a giant hanging tree of lights, shimmering gold and blue under the amethyst canopy.

What’s your favourite Christmas tree in Berlin?
